As teachers, we want to provide a positive experience for our students. This involves creating a safe and loving classroom environment. The beginning of the year is the perfect time to teach kindness and acceptance. With so many students coming from other cultures, The Name Jar is an excellent book to read at the beginning of the year.

The Name Jar focuses on individual differences, identity, and cultural acceptance. When Unhei, a young Korean girl, moves to America with her family and arrives at a new school, she debates changing her name so she fits in. Her friendship with Joey helps her in accepting her Korean name and teaching others about its meaning.
Introducing the Book
- To help students understand the location of Korea, I've provided a map of Korea. Students can extend learning by finding fun facts about the country. This is also a good time for students in your classroom to share where their family is from.
- Students can write down things they wonder about in the story. As they read, they can write the answers to their questions.
