Each year, I've made a pledge to donate all proceeds from a special project based learning unit in my Teachers Pay Teachers store. Plan a Community for the Homeless is a project based learning unit based on the development of Community First Village here in Austin, Texas.
This community is developed by Mobile Loaves and Fishes for housing the homeless, giving them a purpose in life, and empowering them with jobs. Over 300 tiny homes have been built in this sustainable village. From 2017 through 2020, my sales of this PBL unit, raised over $5000. These funds have been donated to Community First Village.
Last year, a truck was purchased an 18 year-old food truck. In one year, one truck makes 330 runs and delivers more than 21,000 meals to our neighbors experiencing homelessness and poverty. And, in one year, one truck provides up to 4,000 opportunities for volunteers to serve.
This has been a difficult year for everyone. The homeless situation has increased because of Covid. More and more people are in need of food and shelter.
It's not too late to help! By purchasing this Plan a Community for the Homeless unit, you can help increase my donation for this year! If you teach 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th, or 9th grade students - this is the perfect download for you. Your students will learn important lessons of tolerance and acceptance.
Your students will create a sustainable community for the homeless. This will require reading informational text and the different causes and effects of homelessness. This PBL unit focuses on a real world problem, while also using 21st Century skills. Click through to learn more about how this great download can be used at any time of year in the upper elementary, middle, or high school classroom.
