With school starting, teachers are preparing their classrooms for their new group of students. As teachers prepare their classrooms and units to teach, it's also important to prepare your students for using computers. Keeping our students safe when they are online is as important as keeping them safe on the playground. CyberSafety and CyberBullying is an important unit that needs to be taught in all schools and at all grade levels.
I begin discussing online safety with my students on the first day of class. I emphasize that being a good citizen includes the way each student behaves while on the computer and online. I tell the students that RESPECT is a key word.
RESPECT yourself
RESPECT others and their work
RESPECT property
In my Cyber Safety and Cyberbullying unit, I include several videos sponsored by The Center for Missing and Exploited Children and the FBI. These videos are perfect because the students learn through a non-threatening format. I’ve also included posters, role-playing activities, a CyberSafety Pledge with badges and other informative activities. Students are introduced to Sheriff Cyber Sam who is protecting them from cyberbullies and online predators.
With students having access to so many forms of technology devices to communicate and so many different forms of social media, it’s important for them to use technology in a safe and mindful way.
